IGN is reporting that Disney’s 20 year later sequel to Tron will be in IMAX as well traditional theatres. I must confess, while I’m hardly a big Tron guy, the first movie was an 80’s classic. The fact that they got the crew back together for a sequel is just all kinds of awesome. Oddly enough my GF says she’s never even seen the original Tron.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and IMAX Corporation made the joint announcement today that Tron: Legacy will be released to IMAX theatres in IMAX 3D simultaneously with the film’s wide release on December 17, 2010. Tron: Legacy is the third film of the announced five-film agreement between IMAX and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Mark Zoradi, president, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group, had the following to say on the announcement:

“This is an ideal movie for IMAX’s immersive format, Tron: Legacy already packs a punch in Disney Digital 3D, and to give audiences the option to experience the enhanced premium IMAX 3D version is a real treat. We’re particularly excited to reach a much wider audience now that the IMAX network is expanding with its digital locations.”

Needless to say, I’ll be going to see this in the IMAX. Of course we’ll have to rent the original first. But you don’t have to have seen the original to know that this trailer looks cool. Tron is built for the kind of world that CGI can create. Which puts it above so many other projects that rely so heavily on CGI in my view. Check out the trailer below.
