Lame headline title aside, John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness is back! According to the BBC, Torchwood is back for an all new season set to begin filming soon. US Premium network, STARZ will be co-producing. Russell T. Davies is back on board overseeing everything. As you may recall, rumors were swirling that Fox was going to make a US Version of Torchwood, but that fell through earlier this year leaving some fans wondering if the show wasn’t going to come back at all.

This new announcement means the show will go back to it’s roots somewhat, with John Barrowman’s Capt. Jack Harkness and Eve Myles’ Gwen Cooper on board, but it’s also going to take some of that US based idea with it. Apparently the team will be going abroad more and there will be American characters as well, giving the Torchwood mythos a more international flare. Starz has shome some interest in recent years in becoming a player in the premium channel lineup and this is obviously a big step.

While Fox would have given Torchwood more press, Starz is probably a better fit for an adult show like Torchwood. It should be interesting to see how BBC America will fit into this, since Torchwood proved to be a big hit for them, but obviously Starz has outbid them on the rights to air the show. BBC America has to actually buy it’s shows from the regular UK BBC.

Needless to say I’m pretty excited for this news as I quite liked Torchwood despite some frustrations I had with it at times and I know my GF will be elated. If you’ve never watched Torchwood, I did a handy non-spoiler Complete Series Overview this past year. I’ve also got some Torchwood figure reviews from way back as well, starting with The Blowfish as well as the Doctor Who version of Jack Harkness with the Doctor’s Hand.
