This post brought to you by Walgreens. All opinions are 100% mine.

For decades Walgreens has become the name you know and trust to get your medical supplies and prescriptions filled. Walgreens has more 24 hour locations than any other pharmacy in the country. Walgreens is always seeking to help out it’s clients with the best, most affordable and efficient services to get prescriptions filled. Unfortunately that also means coming at odds with businesses like Express Script who have recently refused to renew their contract with Walgreens, despite Walgreens working to keep the relationship fruitful to those who need it. You can read more about the issue here: Walgreens and Express Script.

The good news is that Walgreens is planning on expanding some discounts to users who formerly used Express Script and now want to continue to have those Walgreens benefits. Their Walgreens Prescription Savings Club is now being offered for $10 a year for a family membership which covers everything from you, your spouse and any children under 22 and even PETS! Also if you are a single person it’s only $5 per individual. You will receive discounts on your prescriptions filled through Walgreens. Plus savings on over 8,000 brand name and generic medications.

So what exactly is happening with Walgreens and Express Script? Express Script wanted to change the terms of their contracts as they saw fit and consistently held back Walgreens from being able to perform it’s services most efficiently, including blocking certain 90-day refill forms. Walgreens tried to negotiate and keep prices down without cutting any services, but Express Script would not play ball. Now Express Script will likely see it’s rates and prices rise, because they won’t have the confidence and competitive pricing of Walgreens.

Remember that only Walgreens patients with prescription insurance plans through Express Scripts are going to be effected. You should check with your local Walgreens pharmacist to find out if your plan is impacted and see if you can sign up for the Walgreens Prescription Savings Plan to help offset the difference.
