Is Nicolas Cage going to be in the Green Hornet? Who will play Kato? Is Cameron Diaz going to be a part of it? And what’s so damned special about the Green Hornet anyway?

Variety reports that Nicolas Cage is in early talks to play the gangster villain in The Green Hornet. Cameron Diaz is still in talks to play the film’s love interest. Seth Rogen will star as the Green Hornet. Stephen Chow recently left the film, leaving the role of Kato vacant.

Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) will direct. Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote the script.

The film is due out on July 9th, 2010.

I have to tell you this sounds interesting to me. I’m bummed that Stephen Chow is out of the picture but I think Nic Cage could play an interesting villain character. Cage is better when he can dive into a unique role and I think a villain lead could give him that. As for who should fill Kato’s shoes? Everyone wants to put a name martial artist in the role, but Bruce Lee was largely unknown when he got the original part and I think a unknown but talented kung-fu actor would be great.

A lot of people will tell you that Green Hornet is all about Kato, but I honestly disagree. Make no mistake, Bruce Lee was badass as Kato in the 1960’s, but the Green Hornet was always about Van Williams and the Hornet to me. He’s got a sidekick who is very much his equal (whereas Robin is kind of a wuss) and that makes their dichotomy much different, but Hornet kicks plenty of ass on his own.

The Green Hornet has a lot of similarities to Batman. However Hornet also has some similarities to Spider-Man and Superman in the sense that he works for a newspaper. So is Hornet one big ripoff? Nope. Actually everyone ripped Hornet off. So the movie could be a great way to show off this vintage hero in a modern flare and give the character some of it’s roots back.

I think Seth Rogen could be a great Green Hornet is he actually plays the role serious. He has the looks and although he’s not as dashing as Van Williams, he can clean up well. I just recently watched Pineapple Express and if you look hard enough between the crude humor you see that a real action movie is there. Hopefully that’s what this turns into a fun summer action flick and not a comedy vehicle.

If Cage comes on board I’d expect this to get more serious. I can take or leave Diaz.

Seriously? Seth Rogen? Megapass for me. In just about every movie I’ve ever seen him in he’s just about ruined it for me (I think his best role was in that one Lonely Island video, and only because his part was so minimal). I guess my main problem with him — that he’s just not funny — would be absent if he played the role straight, but there’s just something about him that turns me off completely.
