Last week you may recall me making a little Commander X comic with the new Mego style Commander X figure. Long story short, Commander X is a character who is part of the Undersea Adventures of Captn’ Eli. Commander X and Eli’s adventures are more or less part of “today” whereas Commander X also has his own comics that are part of the 1940’s era. Making Commander X a pulp style hero. Every December 15th, Jay Piscopo and his crew of talented artists and friends put together a new Commander X comic for free on their site CaptnEli.com.

What’s great about the comic is that not only is it free, but it’s really well done. It really captures the magic of comics of yesteryear with all kinds of fun nods to stuff you probably loved. The other great part is that the Commander X stories have a great format with X working as a ultra-hero (super hero) but also fulfilling his destiny by going around and fighting very specific crimes given to him from the SHIVA computer. It’s a bit like Quantum Leap in that sense. Commander X has to right all these wrongs.

Anyway, a new adventure just came out today. This years adventure includes rocket packs, giant gorillas and artic adventure! Jay gets a ton of great people to help him with these comics so you get three or four little mini stories along with some cool pin-ups in each issue. But none of the mini stories look the same. Some are done in traditional comic style, some are done in a more stylized modern art deco and one of the stories is done in a novel format akin to like an old Hardy Boys adventure or something of that ilk.

The end result is something just absolutely beautiful and fun and I really hope it’s a Christmas tradition that can continue for years to come. Check out the press release below and then go read this year and last years Commander X comic for free Right Here. If that doesn’t make you want to get some of the Commander X figures then you must not have a pulse!

PORTLAND, MAINE (December 15, 2009) – Commander X-Mas is here! Nemo Publishing, publisher of Jay Piscopo’s “The Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli” all-ages graphic novel series, has released its 2nd annual “Commander X Adventures.” This free comic book is available at – http://www.captneli.com/dailycomic.php

“Commander X Adventures” features pulp adventure stories about the legendary time traveler, Commander X, and the mysterious Circe, Sorceress of the Sea. Both Commander X and Circe are integral characters in the “Capt’n Eli” series and “Commander X Adventures” takes readers back in time to the 1930s, 40s, and 50s with tales from the past.

“Commander X Adventures tries to recapture the magic of the pulps and the golden age of comics with a modern twist,” said Piscopo. “Our hero, Commander X, is a classic comic strip and movie serial hero with some high tech gizmos and time travel thrown in.”

Piscopo edited this pulp adventure comic book with a team of creators from the United States and England.

Pulp and comic author Frank Schildiner contributed two stories. The first is “Commander X vs. The Simian Squad” in which the Commander faces off with jet-packed gorillas in an action-packed story with a Christmas twist. This piece is illustrated by U.K. artist Mike Fyles in his signature pulp style. Readers will remember Fyles’ illustrations from last year’s “Commander X Adventures.”

Schildiner’s second story, “First Encounter,” is about the first meeting of Commander X and his scarlet-clad ally, Circe, Sorceress of the Sea. This story is set in Antarctica as well as the dark streets of 1930’s urban America where Commander X is on the trail of the Red Octopus. Exciting new artists Danny Kelly and Robert Caine Jeffcoat provided the illustrations for this piece.

The final story is written and illustrated by Commander X creator, Jay Piscopo. In “Wake of the War-Beast,” Commander X and Circe team up to subdue an ancient sea monster in the Sea of Japan.

“Commander X Adventures” also features Circe pin-ups by accomplished illustrators Norn Cutson and Delfin Barral.
