It’s time for another Classic Comic Ad, this time from Marvel Comics. No surprise that many old Marvel comics are chocked full of in house ads. This one appears like it’s an in house ad, but is actually just an ad for a Marvel board game by Pressman.

I never played the game, so I don’t know if it’s any good. I do think that the use of cards is pretty well ahead of it’s time. It seems like in the 80’s and early 90’s there were a lot of board game that incorporated a card element… And yet they always bombed. At the end of the 90’s and early 2000’s though, card battle games took off like wildfire. I wonder what the real difference was?

The art here is quite unique. Spider-man looks good, but Hulk and Venom look so plain. I like that in a sense, because today those two characters are always drawn so exaggerated. It’s also fun to notice that poor Venom is outnumbered big time. Did they really need Wolverine, Captain America, Hulk and Spider-man to fight Venom?!

I wonder if this sort of art was used in the game itself or just for the promotional work. Anyone ever have this Pressman Marvel board game? Did you join the Marvel Super Heroes in battle?
