Mattel Q and A

MattyQAnewst
Answers showed up a bit early, so enjoy some advanced MattyCollector answers!

1. Will the Batman Beyond figure with the wings and new headsculpt still be released? If so, where?

This one is a little harder as he is not an original character the way Damien or Larfleeze was. If fans would like to see him released as a sub slot, let us know and we can look at this for late 2014 or early 2015. But our feeling is that fans would prefer wholly originally characters in the sub as we only have 12 slots. Let us know!

2. Certain figures are not offered day of sale. Whether by coicidence or intention, those have typically been popular, fan requested characters. If this is done to help lock in people who may be on the fence about subscribing, wouldn’t it be more prudent to say specifically which characters won’t be offered day of sale while the subs are still available for purchase?

Many times we do not know until closer to the sale whether or not there will be day of stock. There are a lot of behind the scene logistics involved.

Editor’s Note: Logisitc

3. Will the D23 exclusive “Small Fry Buzz Lightyear” be available on mattycollector.com after D23 in the same way that the D23 exclusive “Woody’s Roundup” Black and White Woody and Television set was avilable to purchase on mattycollector.com? If so, when will it be released for sale?

No, we won’t be offering this on Mattycollector.com.

4. Is the only way a “The Dark Knight Returns” Superman, which is compatible with the previously released TDKR Batman, may be made available to consumers is if TDKR Superman is included in the DCIE subscription?

At this time, the only way the 6″ 4HM style will continue is if we get enough sub holders for 2014. There are no plans right now for this style to continue at retail.

5. Do the number of MOTUC figures produced vary from sku to sku? If so, what determines if a particular character has more or less figures produced?

Yes, but that is a trade secret!

Editor’s Note: Trade

As always, if you have questions you’d like submitted to Mattel email me or reply here with a question and I’ll try to get it asked.

1. The upcoming SDCC Batusi Batman has double jointed elbows. No doubt to improve his dance moves. Is this the only 66 Batman figure that is planned to have this added articulation?

Yes.

2. How many more opportunities will fans have to get Strobo? He’s still missing in a lot of collections, even that of subscribers and die-hards who’ve been with the brand since day one!

He will be offered at a variety of traveling cons like Power Con and NYCC similar to the TOD Sorceress figure last year. Offering him early in March was above and beyond what we offered last year. We technically haven’t even gotten to one of the cons he will be at yet! So saying you are missing the Traveling Con figure when we have yet to get to a single Traveling Con show is a bit of a jump!

Editor’s Note: I hate the traveling con exclusive. Mattel doesn’t go to any Cons I go to. Not being able to get Strobo, a figure I actually wanted, is annoying. I thought I bought a subscription so I wouldn’t miss figures, but the traveling convention figures are just more annoyance.

3. If the Mini Masters do well at SDCC, will we potentially see more of them?

Potentially, but no plans right now.

4. Will we see more MOTUC Mini Comics in the 2013 subscription?

No, but we will have one in 2014 if the sub goes through.

5. You’ve announced a new 52 Shazam figure, but is there any chance of an actual Billy Batson in any of the lines?

No plans at this time but you never know.

As always, if you have questions you’d like submitted to Mattel email me or reply here with a question and I’ll try to get it asked.

It’s the last Q&A before SDCC. Will we find out any secrets before then?!

1. There has been a lot of grumbling about how the Spirit of Hordak figure is being released. Isn’t the “thrill of the hunt” method that is being used counterintuitive to a line that is supported by a subscription service? Will subscribers eventually be given a chance to own the figure without having to check mattycollector.com constantly?

Sub holders will have the chance to buy a SOH during two Early Access sales in 2013. One happened already, the next will be at the end of the year. However, note that being a sub holder does not guarantee you a SOH figure. Much like convention or holiday items, he is not part of the subscription.

2. Why was the arm articulation removed from the Mini Masters SDCC figures? When we first saw these guys previewed several years ago they had a much wider range due to a ball style joint at the shoulder.

To keep them at a $20.00 price. They still have articulation, we just could not give them ball joints.

3. Back at the early part of the turn of the century, Mattel recreated molds for the vintage He-Man figures for special editions. Have those molds been kept up and has Matty ever considered doing some sort of special “vintage style” figure releases?

Molds usually only last 2-6 years, so likely these are long gone.

4. We know you can’t announce specifics, but will there be any new subscriptions annnounced to be offered for MattyCollector at SDCC?

We will only have two subs to offer but there will be another big big surprise for fans to pre order during the sub sales!

5. Is there any chance we might get a DC Unlimited or Club Infinite Earths Mxyzptlk any time soon? It seems just wrong that the much less popular, much less notable Bat-Mite’s gotten two releases before Mxyzptlk can get even one. What gives?

Editor’s Note: I submitted this question, but didn’t get an answer. They didn’t “not answer” it, they just didn’t act as if I sent in the question. Not sure if it got lost in the emails or if someone else will accidentally get the answer. Just some sort of a clerical error I assume. I’ll try to ask again if this question is still relevant post-SDCC.

As always, if you have questions you’d like submitted to Mattel email me or reply here with a question and I’ll try to get it asked. I can’t promise that they’ll answer it or even try if they do, but sometimes we do get gems in there. No matter what your question, I will ask it of Mattel. I’m not sending in this time, but I will for the very next round, so you got some time.

1. Given how notorious MOTUC fans are for being a feverish fanbase and how many MOTUC are completeists (you guys yourselves have basically tailored the market to where MOTUC fan’s CAN’T be cherry pickers) what in the world is the logic behind releasing a character like the Spirit of Hordak at a completely unannounced random time, leaving your fan base frustrated and unamused?

To help recreate the fun and excitement of the retail toy hunt online. We knew this program would not appeal to all of our fans, but for many it is being embraced as very innovative and thrilling.

Editor’s Note: Who are these people? Where are they? I must know, so I can punch them in the face!

2. After the Spirit of Hordak, will there be more random figure drops in the future? Should MOTUC fans just spend every chance they get on the MattyCollector site or what?

Our lips are sealed for now!

3. The Dark Knight Returns Batman from the Batman Unlimited series is a fantastic figure. It appeals to both DC Unlimited collectors and MOTUC collectors. Will Mattel make more DC characters with a similar size, style and design as TDKR Batman, including TDKR Superman and possibly even characters like Wonder Woman?

Those figures would be pretty cool! It sounds like you are a fan of TDKR!

Editor’s Note: Is it any wonder I struggle to get people to submit questions, when we get answers like this?

4. In celebration of the new Superman movie, will we see any comic or classic movie characters slip into the line to help flesh it out some? As an example, in the Superman Returns line there was a Metallo figure.

The Superman movie line is inspired by the Man of Steel film, so there will not be any nostalgic characters in the line up. However what you will see are awesome versions of the characters from the new film.

Editor’s Note: Finally a good answer. Unfortunately, not one I really like. I kind of like the designs of the new 3 3/4 Superman figures and I think Mattel could actually extend the line for a while. Add in a Luthor, a Metallo, etc. I really liked that when Marvel did that with their early movie figures and Mattel did that last time around with the Superman returns toys. Oh well.

5. Now that we’re seeing the DC Universe do battle with the MOTU universe, is there any chance for new figures based off of these battles in the comics?

Not at this time. We did a Superman vs. He-Man 2 pack at Toys R Us a few years ago, but don’t have future crossover packs planed right now.

Editor’s Note: You did a Superman versus He-Man set before? I had no idea, none at all.

As always, if you have questions you’d like submitted to Mattel email me or reply here with a question and I’ll try to get it asked. I can’t promise that they’ll answer it or even try if they do, but sometimes we do get gems in there. No matter what your question, I will ask it of Mattel. Ask Matty Summer Edition

1. What would Mattel say is the greatest strength of the Masters of the Universe Classics line to date?

The power of our fans!

Editor’s Note: I guess that’s what I get for throwing a softball. To be fair, I guess it IS an accurate answer.

2. Has Mattel shopped around the idea of other MOTUC exclusives to retailers? Obviously the TRU experiment was met with limited success, but since that time has Mattel pitched any new concepts like this to other retailers?

At this time MOTU will remain exclusive to Mattycollector.com. We do not have plans for retail product.

3. Will Aquaman get a singles release in the new Target line? It seems like right now he’s only available in the multi-pack. It seems like he should be available as a single with his trident.

He will not be a part of the 2013 singles assortment. So if you love Aquaman, the multi-pack is the place to get him.

Editor’s Note: NOOOOOO! He’s the only one I really want. I guess I have to wait for that pack to go on clearance.

4. There already seems to be a lot of Superman variants hitting the shelves. What exactly is the strategy behind putting out so many different Superman figures in wacky alternate costumes?

The Man of Steel line celebrates the film and Superman. The various costumes will allow boys and collectors to play out a variety of Superman stories.

Editor’s Note: I just wish they tried a bit harder on these variants. Is it that hard to come up with a really compelling reason for a new Superman suit?

5. Will the old WWE Hardcore title see release anywhere aside from the upcoming Kane exclusive?

Not at this time.

If you have questions you’d like submitted to Mattel (I sent in a few this round from folk’s submissions to be answered next time around), email me or reply here with a question and I’ll try to get it asked. No matter what your question, I will ask it of Mattel. I need some good questions folks.
